B12 Chassis and tender to Riley & Son (E) for overhaul
The Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society are pleased to announce that a contract has been signed with Riley & Son (E) Ltd, for the mechanical overhaul of the engine chassis and tender of its unique LNER Class B12/3 No. 8572 steam locomotive.
The engine chassis and tender are currently positioned outside in front of Weybourne MPD with the engine chassis protected against the elements with a tarpaulin, waiting for a convenient date for transportation to Riley & Son (E) Ltd’s Engineering Works at Heywood, Lancashire.
It is anticipated the move will take place in late February/early March once space becomes available in the Contractor workshop.
Once the engine and tender have been fully stripped and examined it will be possible to estimate how long the overhaul will take.
The engine chassis received its last major overhaul by Riley & Son (E) Ltd, so they are already familiar with the locomotive.
The boiler overhaul will be undertaken by the North Norfolk Railway Engineering Team (in the Weybourne Boiler Shop), and is being prepared for a comprehensive non-destructive examination by a specialist contractor, from which in conjunction with our nominated body’s engineering surveyor, a detailed scope of the work required to overhaul the boiler can be produced.
