Appeal for Missing Canopy Spandrels
Behind the scenes, work is progressing on the Sheringham Canopy Project, with work underway that will eventually see the reinstatement of several canopy stanchions on Platform Two at Sheringham.
This work is part of a wider plan by the North Norfolk Railway, supported by the M&GN Joint Railway Society, to restore Sheringham station to its former glory. So far this winter, the original Sheringham East Signal Box has already been moved back to the level crossing and plans are afoot to rebuild the station building on Platform Two which will provide much needed cover to passengers during inclement weather.
The original building on Platform two was demolished soon after the line through to Melton Constable closed in 1964. The first phase to reinstate the building sees the replacement of the canopy stanchions. These heavy cast iron columns take the weight of the canopy and atop of these sit decorative M&GN spandrels.
We've already restored the stanchions and several of the spandrels, however we are several spandrels short and are appealing for the donation of original spandrels to allow us to restore another unique piece of railway history for everyday use.
