The Diesel Club
The Weybourne Traction Group Diesel Club is the new way to support Diesel Traction on the North Norfolk Railway. The club raises funds for Diesel Traction that is permantently based on the NNR and includes locomotives owned by the M&GN Joint Railway Society, the North Norfolk Railway and other long term resident locomotive owning groups and individuals supportive of the NNR.
The membership of the club is formed entirely by enthusiasts who all support the continued preservation and operation of all forms of diesel traction on the North Norfolk Railway. Membership is obtained by setting up a banker's order of £2 a month or more, with the preffered denomination being £5 month or more.
To join the club, download an application form (click on the button, left) or pick up a leaflet at any NNR station. Once your application has been processed, you will be sent your personal membership card.
The club raises funds to support the investment in and maintenance and overhaul of Diesel locomotives and multiple units on the North Norfolk Railway.
Diesel Traction forms an essential part of the North Norfolk Railway operating calendar, with the daily service from April to October and many other services are reliant on Diesel Traction to provide the thousands of trains the NNR runs throughout the year. Funds raised by the club will go towards helping to improve our fleet by investing in better maintenance regimes (to increase reliability and availability), conducting throrough and long-lasting heavy overhauls (to increase the standard of the fleet) and by undertaking projects to restore and improve heritage aspects of diesel traction to restore them to their former glory.
By joining the Diesel Club, you will become an official member of the Weybourne Traction Group, the organisation which supports diesel operations, running days and events on the North Norfolk Railway. The Traction Group is run entirely by NNR and Society volunteers and publishes up to date news on NNR Diesel Operations via Facebook and Twitter.

Class 03 D2063: D2063 was built in 1959 at Doncaster works. It was allocated throughout the North Eastern Region and worked at York and Gateshead throughout most of its working life. Class 03s were prevalent across much of the Eastern Region with examples based at all major depots for shunting. It is powered by a Gardner 8L3 Diesel engine. D2063 is privately owned.
Class 11 12131: 12131 was built in 1952 at Darlington works. It was an Eastern Region machine, being based around March, Ely and Cambridge before transferring into the hands of the National Coal Board where it worked at the Snowdon Colliery in Kent. It was purchased in 1982 and was restored at the NNR shortly after. It is powered by an English Electric 6KT Diesel engine. 12131 is owned by a consortium of North Norfolk Railway volunteers.
Class 25 25057 (D5207): 25057 was built in 1963 at Derby works. It had a widespread career working across Britain. Class 25s regularly worked in East Anlgia with several based at March depot in Cambridgeshire and were often seen on cross-country workings to Norwich. It was withdrawn in 1987 and eventually purchased by the NNR. It is powered by a Sulzer 6LDA28-B Diesel engine. 25057 is owned by the North Norfolk Railway PLC.
Class 31 D5631 (31207): D5631 was built in 1960 in the Brush works at Loughborough. It was delivered new to Norwich shed (32a) and worked throughout East Anglia including time based at Finsbury Park working alongside the Deltics. It was withdrawn in 2001 and purchased by the M&GN Joint Railway Society. It is powered by an English Electric 12SVT Diesel engine. D5631 is owned by the M&GN Joint Railway Society.
Class 37 D6732 (37032): D6732 was built in 1962 in the Vulcan works at Newton-le-Willows. It was originally based at Hull Dairycoates depot and ended service with British Rail at Tinsley where it was purchased by the Anglia Type Three Association and became the first Class 37 to work in preservation. Following an extensive heavy general overhaul, it returned to traffic in 2013. It is powered by an English Electric 12CVST Diesel engine. D6732 is owned by the Anglia Type Three Association.
Class 101 DMU 101681: The NNR's Class 101 DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is formed of a Driving Motor and a Driving Trailer car and represents a classic design which was built extensively in the 1950s to replace steam traction. 101681 worked up to 2003 where it was withdrawn and subsequently purchased by the North Norfolk Railway. It is powered by two Leyland 150bhp 6-cylinder Diesel engines. 101681 is owned by the North Norfolk Railway.
Diesel Railbus E79960: The DRB (Diesel Railbus) is a unique design and was built by the German builder Waggon und Masshienenbau in 1958 for use on quiet rural branch lines. Their use was shortlived, with all examples being withdrawn in the late 1960s at which time E79960 moved to the North Norfolk Railway. It is powered by a single Leyland 150bhp 6-cylinder Diesel engine. The DRB is owned by the North Norfolk Railway.
The Weybourne Traction Group Diesel Club’s purpose is to raise funds to assist with the maintenance, investment in, and overhaul of, all diesel traction (including Diesel Locomotives and Diesel Multiple Units) permanently based on the North Norfolk Railway, from time to time. ‘Permanently based’ diesel traction is defined as diesel traction owned by the NNR or the Society and other long term resident diesel traction owning groups or private individuals supportive of the NNR and Society.
The club is administered by the M&GN Joint Railway Society. The club administrator is Stephen Issit. There is no fixed membership term; membership to the club is renewed on a monthly basis through the payment of a monthly banker's order. Preferred monthly contributions are of £5 per month or more, however, members are welcome to contribute any amount upwards of £2 per month.
Contributions from members go into a restricted ‘diesel fund’, which is managed by the M&GNJRS. From this fund, diesel traction owners can apply for grant funding from the Society for maintenance, restoration and overhaul tasks, providing that they meet the charitable objectives of the M&GNJRS. Applications for grant funding are to be put to the NNR Engineering Committee for consideration, with their recommendations being presented to the M&GNJRS Finance Committee or Board for ratification. The Diesel Club is run in addition to all other Special Interest Clubs and does not supercede any existing clubs, such as the Society's Class 31 Club or Loco Club.
